IT happened in 1969, on the 70th birthday of Duke Ellington. He was invited to the White House to perform and be presented with the nations highest civilian award, The Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The Duke grew up near the White House and his father was a Butler there.
He was treated like a Head of State (The Duke, not the Butler) , by Nixon. Now aint that just something?
